How many of you applied for dozens, if not hundreds, of jobs last year? If you’re like most people, chances are pretty good that your resume went into the stratosphere, never to be seen by the overworked eyes of our nation’s hardworking recruiters.
What if some of the jobs you applied for are still open? It’s possible when the company originally posted the job, there was a reasonable expectation they would fill it. However, keep in mind that the last quarter of the year is typically when depart…

It took 8 months, but after being laid-off right before Christmas last year, I finally found a great new job. I start in 2 weeks. The hardest part about being let go was making sure we were covered with
Medical insurance,
Dental insurance, or for that matter
High deductible health insurance. Once I figured out how to do this with…

As I see network grow and grow it continues to make me reflect how much harder it is going to be to feel "normal" again. I pray and hope that some people have obtained employment and all is going well.
As for me since my last post, I put on my volunteer hat and went to any event at my kids school to keep myself busy. I am beeat but it kept me on my toes.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend with their family and friends!!

This may be one of the vaguest blogs but I will try my best to make it sound as coherent as possible. Everyone here is fully aware and doing what they need to do to get by.
My need is for an impartial 3rd part to help me review my inventory of what I am paying for and then next steps in how I can minimize my needs so I can start a new list on how to sell my house. I know this should be a "joint" discussion with my husband but I am looking for help to write the list to bring this discussion up w…

Job boards are a waste of time. In this job climate, any job that has made it to a public posting will be so overrun with applicants that not even the best-qualified person has much of a chance. The problem is with numbers -- when an HR person gets 300 resumes for a position, he or she just can't sift through them all in truly efficient manner, so ultimately it's almost random who makes it to the "finals".
What works then? I've said it before, but personal or quasi-personal relationships are by…

My name is Doris Anne Beaulieu. I have a website-Life’s Ultimate Test dot com-on which you can learn more about my mission to change the face of home schooling.
I attended a parochial school as a child in the 1950's. In this Catholic school I was sheltered from the realities of the world around me-from swearing, from public displays of affection, from slang. These are often some of the same things that modern home schooling parents aim to protect their children from. A superior court judge said”…

Three out of four Americans believe an unattractive smile can hurt one's chances for career success, and only half of all adults are satisfied with their smiles."

I think most of us have beautiful smiles and we are our own worst enemies.

A friendly voice on the radio insists I stop drinking my coffee from a paper cup so that more trees can thrive. Sean Penn and cereal boxes remind me to recycle, to save our planet. I realize that they are doing this to ride a trend and make some money, but I am beginning to wonder – why should I – or any of us - concern ourselves with a planet that seems so indifferent to our survival and property? What has the earth done for us lately?
Don't get me wrong. I am not suggesting we throw trash out…

Save Water and Your Teeth.
by Saundra Goodman
It's Earth Day 2009 and you can take action to protect Planet Earth for the rest of your life. Encourage all of your family members and friends to turn the water off every time they brush their teeth (
at least twice a day). Of course, everyone should be brushing after lunch, too. Run the water to rinse your mouth.
That’s it. That’s all you have to do to be a
Water Warrior and a good environmental citizen.
The Environmental Protection…

I lost my job in January, along with 4,000 other employees in my company across the country. Jobs are few and far between and those that exist seem to target young, physically active people with no disabilities, or nurses. I live in a college city with an endless supply of cash-strapped students filling positions.
I know people who have taken their Master degrees off of their resumes. Some have taken their Bachelor degrees off so they don't appear to be over-qualified for minimum wage jobs. You…

It has been a while since I wrote a blog, let alone one with any pertinent information. I thought to myself, better to be open and share how I feel with others in hoping there are some who feel as I do.
This past month, I have been finishing up the final phases of my home improvement and though the project is done, it is now beginning to sadden me in thinking how long will be I able to appreciate something that I have always wanted and was able to manage.
Also, I have taken a two-day career tra…

I had an interview today for a position that typically hires people with 5-10 years experience in this specific area. I have no experience in this exact area, and just under 2 years of experience in a related area. Needless to say, it made the interview very interesting when the person I was speaking to was telling me this.
Two ways to go from here: 1) try to "fake it" and pretend that the related experience that I do have is more relevant than it really is, or 2) just tell them flat out "I hav…

Today I met with a friend. Meeting friends is highly recommended when you are out of work. First of all, it gives you a reason to brush your hair and get out of the t-shirt you have been wearing to bed and the following day for a week. Secondly, it gives you a deadline which keeps your timing skills sharp. And lastly, because friends usually make you laugh. Laughing is extremely underrated. I read a study the other day that kids laugh 10 times a day when they are under age 11, more in high schoo…

I am completely sick of the on-line application process. Yesterday I almost said “yes” to “Have you been convicted of a felony?” because I am considering robbing a bank. (Attention FBI: This is a joke). I also have begun checking, “other” when asked for ethnicity.
What makes the whole thing especially irritating is that I am looking for work in high schools and I am being screened as if I were splitting atoms for the CIA.
Anyone who has finished high school knows “a strategy for handling vario…

The 7th of the month has special meaning to me. Like today is the 7th of April. Five years ago today, I started my contract at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Hammond, Indiana. That began a roller coaster experience.
Five months ago today, my position was eliminated at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. I was there just over a year and loved not only the job but the co-workers who became my second family. I miss them every day.

I applied online for poker dealer's school, had an interview today and was accepted. Don't know much about gambling in general. The entertainment industry is a far stretch from the plant floor and process engineering I've done for 20+ years. I have barely ever set foot in the two casinos right in my backyard (LaPorte, IN off I94 about an hour East of Chicago). Wow, this might be alot of fun. I've never done anything fun for money before.

If anyone is interested in producing a marketing brochure as a supplement to their resume I have decided to try this as a way to earn some extra cash! If you would like a brochure produced, send me your resume and a photo you would like to use in the brochure- this should be something that says what you do. I will set up the brochure, arrange for printing and mailing to your home address. Cost is very reasonable. $75. for my efforts plus printing and shipping costs. These are very also very reas…
